How To Add Web page Numbers In Phrase


Whether it is a personal or professional document, numbering the pages is absolutely mandatory for easy readability and better presentation. When there is a number in a document, you can reach the exact page easily. In fact, you can remember the content of a document by its page number. The most preferred application for creating a document is MS Word. This is because MS Word has all the tools to make a document perfect from all perspectives without extra effort.

You can even choose from different formats and get the one that meets your needs. MS Word allows you to add page numbers in the footer, header, and side margin. If you want to number pages differently, you can even go for restart page numbering. Here are all the steps to add page numbers in Word.

For Windows: Step-by-Step guide

Step 1: The first step is to open MS Word on your Windows computer.

To open MS Word, click on the Start button at the bottom left corner. Then you have to go to Microsoft Office and click on MS Word. You can also do the same by searching MS Word on the Start menu and clicking on MS Word from the search result.

Step 2: Once MS Word opens, you need to go to the top menu and click on the tab “Insert”. By default, the “Home” tab is selected.

Step 3: The next step will be to select the “Page Number” option from Header & Footer section.

Step 4: The moment you click on the Page Number option, you will get a drop-down menu. The menu contains various options like “Top of Page”, “Bottom of Page”, “Page Margin” and “Current Position”. These are basically the location of the page number where you want to place it.

Step 5: Once you choose the page number location from the options available, you will see different alignment styles like Plain Number, Accent Bar, Format, Design, and Shape in another drop-down menu. You have to select the style according to your preference.

Step 6: In case you do not wish the page number to appear on the first page, double-click the page number of the first page. You will be under the Design tab on the top menu section. Under the Design tab, go to Options selection and select ”Different first page” option.

Step 7: If you want the page numbering to start from the second page onwards, take the following steps.

  • Go to the page from where you want the page number to appear.
  • Go to Insert tab from the top menu and under Header & Footer section, select “Format Page Numbers”.
  • You will now have to enter “0” for “Start At” option. Click on Ok button.

Step 8: Once you are done inserting the page number, press Esc key on your keyboard. Alternately, you can click on Close the header and footer option under Design menu.

For macOS: Step-by-Step guide

Step 1: On your Macbook, open Microsoft Word and start with a new document.

Step 2: Now you need to go to the Insert menu option.

Step 3: Select the icon of “Page Number” which is on the upper right section.

Step 4: In the drop-down option, you will have to click on the page number icon.

Step 5: You will come across a new option from where you need to choose “Position”. You can select the location for the page numbers as per your preference.

Step 6: Now go to the “Alignment” option and choose from Left, Right, or Center alignment. There are also Inside and Outside options.

Step 7: For the right format, you can choose from different formatting options. This helps to change the numbering style. If you are looking to hide the number on the first page, don’t check on the box “Show number on first page”.

Step 8: The final step will be to click ‘Ok’ twice. Make sure that you have closed all the dialogue boxes. Word will automatically add numbers to the pages.
